A hypnotic Ana Deo figurative post carved by the Nage people of the island of Flores. These stately poles were placed at the entrance to a clan house or chieftan's dwelling and represent tutelary spirits that protect the clan or the house's inhabitants. Archaic Nage post figures or Ngada Ana Deo figures from shrine houses or village squares are impossibly rare.
This imposing and soulful female figure was carved as one-half of a pair. It is one of the finest Flores ancestor posts of this style extant, featuring an early, tastefully executed rendition of the region's hunkered ancestor figures.
